YATRA
SUMMARY OF PROJECT
YATRA—meaning “journey” in Nepali—is a youth-led cultural empowerment program that supports Nepali-Canadian youth in reconnecting with their heritage through creative, spiritual, and community-centered workshops. Blending language learning, music, dance, festival education, and mindfulness practices, the project offers a joyful and inclusive space for youth to rediscover their roots while embracing their bicultural identities. More than a program, YATRA is a collective journey of self-discovery, cultural pride, and leadership development, led by youth and for youth.
SUMMARY OF PLAN
Many second-generation Nepali youth in Canada experience a growing disconnect from their cultural identity. They often don’t speak their native language fluently, rarely learn about their traditions in schools, and can feel pressure to assimilate into a dominant culture that doesn’t reflect their own. This cultural disconnection can lead to confusion, low self-esteem, weakened family bonds, and a lack of belonging. The absence of youth-focused, culturally relevant spaces makes it even harder for them to celebrate who they are and develop a strong sense of identity.
