Many young people aged 15 to 24 are falling into a dangerous gap—they’re not in employment, education, or training (NEET), putting them at risk of long-term social and economic exclusion.
NEET youth face serious consequences, from financial instability and poor mental health to social isolation and even criminal involvement. Many struggle with transitioning from school to work, caring for dependents, or dealing with health concerns, all while lacking work experience and job opportunities.
In Ottawa, the 2021 NEET rate was highest among marginalized groups, with Indigenous youth at 14%, Black youth at 12.6%, and new immigrants at 9.8%. These disparities highlight the need for tailored support.
To help NEET youth succeed, mentorship programs, skill workshops, and access to job and mental health resources are crucial. By addressing their unique barriers, we can help them regain opportunities in education and the workforce, building a brighter future.
