Ethnic & Visible Minority Community Building Working Group

The main goal of the community advisory group is to establish a bilingual (English / French) coalition of ethnocultural organizations which will support the networking, social capital, planning and civic engagement capacity of grassroots ethnocultural groups.

The group's 3 main objectives are is to consult with grassroots ethnocultural groups in Ottawa what would be the most effective and useful structure and objectives for an Ottawa ethnocultural coalition. The second is to solicit a founding board and establish the coalition, consistent with the results of the consultation. and the third and final objective is to increase the capacity of small ethnocultural organizations (the membership) through a series of workshops during the development process.

Communities Within: Diversity and Exclusion in Ottawa

The Social Planning Council and the Centre for Social Welfare Studies at Carleton University are collaborating on a three year research and public education initiative. The project will document the nature and extent of social exclusion experienced by Ottawa's visible and ethnic minority populations in all aspects of life - the economy, City institutions, and social leadership networks. The project will support social planning that factors in the diversity of Ottawa's population. Funding for this three year initiative has been provided by Canadian Heritage. Kids and Community: A Parent Engagement Project

In 2006, through the support of Social Development Canada (Social Development Parnterships) we began a two year project to enhance social inclusion practice and policy related to families with children under 6. The Kids and Community project is part of a 5 site initiative carried by Social Planning Councils across Ontario. The Ottawa project is working with low income families, Aboriginal families, families in which a parent is Deaf or has a disability, and new immigrant families (including Francophones) in Ottawa. As well, the project is partnering with the Renfrew County Child Poverty Action Network to address social exclusion in Renfrew County. The Ottawa project is being implemented with a parent leadership group and an organizational reference group.

Promoting Equity and Diversity in Ottawa: Information Sharing Group

This is an information sharing initiative for groups which work towards encouraging the City of Ottawa to fulfil its commitment under its Equity and Diversity Plicy. Representatives of groups meet periodically and share relevant information.

The designated groups, as outlined in the City of Ottawa's Equity and Diversity Policy, include women, Aboriginal persons, persons with disabilities, members of visible minority groups, and gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and transgendered (GLBT) individuals. Recognizing that community groups may focus their attention on one of these groups, this initiative has been started with the purpose of sharing information across groups.

By being better informed about what each other is working on with the City of Ottawa, we are hopeful this will strengthen each group's respective efforts while moving our collective agenda further.

The information sharing group was established through a collaboration of City for All Women, the Equity and Diversity Advisory Commitee of the City of Ottawa, and the Social Planning Council of Ottawa.
